Planning Your Own Book Event

If you want to have an event using the picture books I have created, asking a local expert — such as a teacher, librarian, or parent to be the main speaker, or asking an array of these people to respond on a panel is a great way to have an event. They can talk about the topics of my books, be it babies, separation, sibling rivalry, growing up, or death. Reading the whole book out loud always works well as part of the program. A psychiatrist, a pediatric social worker, a nurse, or a pediatrician could also be on the panel. Every community has local experts who can address these topics in a way that’s informative and comfortable for children, families, educators, librarians, health professionals, and clergy.

If you want to have an event using the nonfiction books I have created, asking a local expert — such as a teacher, librarian or parent to be the main speaker, or asking an array of people to be part of a panel discussion are great ways to have an event. They can talk about the topics of these books, such as conception, reproduction, sexual health, puberty, bodies, birth and adoption. Reading excerpts from my books works well as part of the program. A psychiatrist, a pediatric social worker, a nurse, or a pediatrician could also be on the panel. Some events can be for parents, educators, librarians, and health professionals. And some can be for elementary school age kids, or teenagers. And some can be for families. Every community has local experts who can address these topics in a way that’s informative and comfortable for children, teens, families, educators, librarians, health professionals, and clergy.

At most events when I am the speaker, children, teens and parents or other professionals appreciate the opportunity to purchase one of the books under discussion and to have them autographed. There are two ways to facilitate that: Ask your local bookstore to order copies and come and sell books on the premises. Sometimes, if you ask a local bookstore, it will donate $1 per book to your group. However, not every bookstore can afford to do that.

I am happy to sign books at any event at which I am present both before and after the program. And in certain instances, when I am not at an event, I can sign bookplates and send them to the event organizer to place in the books to be sold. Unfortunately, I cannot do this every time I am asked, especially if I am in the midst of a book project. But don’t let that stop you from asking. Most often, I can do it!

If, because of my work or
schedule, I cannot book an author
appearance, you can still have an event
without my being there, using the
picture books or nonfiction
books I have created.
